The crisp autumn air at Fortress Obetz and Memorial Park carried the weight of expectation Saturday, as the Minster Wildcats continued a remarkable tradition – competing at the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Cross Country State Championships for an astounding 28 consecutive years. While the ultimate goal of a state title eluded them this year, finishing as runners-up in Division IV is a testament to their dedication and grit, a powerful symbol of rural Ohio athletics and the strength of teamwork. The OHSAA, dedicated to fostering athletic excellence across the state, witnessed another year of impressive performances.

The Minster Legacy: 28 Years of State Appearances

The Minster girls’ cross-country program’s consistent presence at the state meet is a source of immense pride for the school and the wider community. This year, they secured second place in Division IV with a score of 145 points. Liberty Center took the top spot with 112 points, followed by Grandview Heights (149), Rittman (185) and Fort Loramie (215) in a field of 24 teams. The Wildcats’ performance was anchored by junior Joanna Topp, who finished eighth in a remarkable 18 minutes, 37.1 seconds, and freshman Elizabeth Niekamp, who closely followed in ninth with a time of 18:40.5. Rounding out the team were Claire Bohman (12th, 18:48.1), Olivia Blindauer (76th, 20:05.7), Ava Colter (128th, 21:03.9), Catelyn Cedarleaf (132nd, 21:09.3) and Cara Bornhorst (156th, 21:38). The City of Lima, a hub for Northwest Ohio athletics, proudly watched its athletes compete on the state stage.

Beyond Minster's success, Lima area runners made their mark. Celina sophomore Elle Miesse delivered a stunning performance, finishing second in Division II with a time of 17:44.5, just behind Sylvania Southview’s Julia Bocik (17:37.7). Lincolnview freshman Maeleigh Evans showcased incredible promise, securing 17th place in Division IV and setting a personal best time of 18:58. Ottawa-Glandorf’s Lily Nienberg placed 31st in Division III, while Van Wert’s Noelle Byrum finished 40th. These athletes demonstrate the dedication and talent found within our local schools and communities. Local parks, like those managed by the Lima Parks and Recreation Department, provide vital spaces for training and community engagement.

For Minster senior Claire Bohman, Saturday marked the end of an era – her final high school cross-country race. While she’ll continue her athletic journey at the University of St. Francis, competing in both cross country and track, her leadership and consistency will be deeply missed by her teammates. Bohman's commitment to her team and pursuit of excellence reflects the values of hard work and dedication that are so important in our community. “Before today’s race I was talking to the girls, and I said, ‘No matter what happens today, I’m so proud of you girls. And you girls have worked so hard,’” Bohman reflected. “It’s crazy. I have basically worked six years for this. And it feels so good to be here together with my team for one last time.” Strong families, like the ones that support these athletes, are the bedrock of a thriving society.

Coach's Perspective: A Season of Growth and Resilience

Longtime Minster girls’ coach Jessie Magoto praised her team’s resilience and competitiveness. “They are a great group,” she said. “Claire (Bohman) has just been a beast for us. She’s been so consistent. With being our only senior competing in the postseason, she just had to really carry the group. With Joanna (Topp), a junior, she has really stepped it up. She (Topp) is such a fierce competitor. Today, she was on fire. Ellie (Elizabeth Niekamp), a freshman, is such a competitor. I was just really happy. I felt like they were not afraid.” Magoto emphasized the importance of the team's collective effort and individual growth throughout the season.

Individual Standout Performances

Joanna Topp’s eighth-place finish (18:37.1) and Elizabeth Niekamp’s ninth-place finish (18:40.5) were instrumental in Minster’s success. Elle Miesse's second-place finish in Division II (17:44.5) showcased the talent emerging from Celina, while Lincolnview freshman Maeleigh Evans’ 17th-place finish (18:58) highlighted the future of the sport. These athletes, along with their teammates, represent the dedication and hard work that define high school cross country in Northwest Ohio.

Community Reaction: Pride and Gratitude

The success of the Minster girls’ cross-country team has resonated throughout the community, celebrating not just a state runner-up finish but a testament to their commitment and perseverance. Elle Miesse, still processing her impressive second-place finish, expressed gratitude for the opportunity. “I’m really happy,” she said. “God has been so good to me… Coming in, I was expecting to get either first or second, but it was whatever God was going to allow me to do. So, I’m really grateful for it.” The faith and humility displayed by these young athletes are a testament to the values instilled in them by their families and communities.

Lincolnview freshman Maeleigh Evans, beaming with excitement, shared her feelings about her first state meet. “It’s like so surreal. It’s so amazing and exciting,” she said. “I felt a lot stronger than I normally do. And this race, the crowd was so energetic. I could feel it and it helped so much.” The encouragement and support of coaches and teammates are invaluable, especially for young athletes navigating the pressures of competition.

Looking Ahead: New Seasons and Continued Growth

As the cross-country season concludes, the memories of Saturday’s performances will undoubtedly fuel the athletes’ dedication throughout the year. For Minster, the focus shifts to track and field, where Bohman will continue her athletic career at the University of St. Francis. For Celina, Elle Miesse’s remarkable talent promises a bright future in distance running. Lincolnview’s Maeleigh Evans has set a strong foundation for her high school career, and the Ottawa-Glandorf and Van Wert teams will look to build on their experiences for next year.

The OHSAA recognizes runners who placed 1-24 in Divisions II, III and IV as First Team All-Ohio, while placers 25-48 earn Second Team All-Ohio honors. This recognition highlights the dedication and skill of these athletes and underscores the importance of striving for excellence in all endeavors. The pursuit of athletic achievement can instill valuable life lessons – discipline, perseverance, and the importance of teamwork – qualities that will serve these young people well long after they leave the track.

Ronald’s Take: Beyond the Finish Line

Watching these young women compete at the state level, I’m struck by more than just their athletic prowess. It’s the quiet dignity, the unwavering support for one another, and the evident pride in representing their schools and communities. There’s a certain grace that comes from pushing yourself to the limit, embracing both victory and defeat with humility. These are lessons far more valuable than any medal.

The consistent success of the Minster program, year after year, speaks to a commitment to tradition, discipline, and the importance of strong family values. These are the cornerstones of a thriving community – the kind of values that build resilient individuals and a brighter future for all. It's encouraging to see young athletes like Elle Miesse and Maeleigh Evans expressing gratitude for their blessings and acknowledging a higher power in their success – a testament to the enduring power of faith.
